1 January 2022 update!!!! Dates and More!

Kayaksurf community,

Happy New Year! Feliz año nuevo!

As 2021 closes we just wanted to provide you with an update on the plans and schedule for the 2022 World Championships of Surfkayaking being held in beautiful Bude from 29 September to 9 October 2022.

Location(s)

To maximise quality of waves available to us during the competition we have decided to position judging towers at 2 locations;

  1. Crooklets and Middlebeach. Within walking distance of Bude town centre, Crooklets and Middlebeach provide us with 2 peaks of high-quality beach break through most of the tide, alongside access to Bude Surf Lifesaving Club for shower, changing and logistic facilities.
  1. Black Rock at Widemouth Bay. Located 3 miles south of Bude town, Black Rock has 2 main peaks that work through the tide, a lefthand reef and a high-quality a-frame backbreak. Black Rock will typically be surfable when Bude town is mazed out, with the reef holding substantial size.

Schedule for 2022

By February 1st – a full list of recommended accommodation will be provided to the community through our website. Working with Bude Tourist Information Centre we are putting together a list of accommodation providers offering special rates for the period of the contest (or longer) to suit all needs and budgets.

23rd and 24th April – The annual Shoreline Surf kayak Festival is being held at Black Rock providing competitors with another opportunity to compete at one of the locations for the World Championships. Competitors may find out more information and register here.

May 1 – individual competitor registration opens on Tournr. Initially individuals will be limited to 2 divisions.

June 1 – team competitor registration opens on Tournr.

June 31st – all first-round entries close (Team and Individuals). Depending on the level of signup we may open a later round of registration and allow individuals to enter more divisions (to be advised).

September 29 – On-site registration, boat-check (AM) and opening ceremony.

September 30 to October 9 – World Championships of Surf kayaking competition.

October 9 – Closing party at Widemouth Manor.

(We will try to stick to these dates but will update you if anything changes, as we are still early in the games – particularly regarding the ongoing global pandemic.)

As we get closer to the contest, we will keep you updated and provide you with more information about the event, our supporters, and our beautiful town to help you to prepare for your journey to 2022 World Championships of Surf kayaking.

See you in the autumn!

2022 Worlds Team

Comunidad de kayaksurf,

¡Feliz año nuevo! Happy New Year!

Para maximizar la calidad de las olas disponibles para nosotros durante la competencia, hemos decidido colocar torres de jueces en 2 ubicaciones;

  1. Crooklets y Middlebeach.

Doing our bit……..start of the journey.

Environmentally, international competition is a challenge. Travelling from the corners of the earth produces a lot of carbon, and the other waste associated with running large contests (for example, the large scale use of non-reusable plastic bottles) can be terrible. And yet, so many of us consider ourselves environmentalists, we love the ocean, we clean our beaches, and we do what we can to reduce our impact throughout our lives.

The location for 2021 World Championships of Surf Kayaking community woodland.

So we decided that the 2021 World Championships of Surf Kayaking would be different, and our goal would be to reduce our environmental impact to near zero. In fact, our goal is to set a precedent for future international surf and kayak events and to contribute to the environmental legacy of our town, Bude. In order to achieve this, we have committed to the following;

  1. Reduce plastic waste to zero. We talk a little bit about this in our earlier blog.
  2. Run a carbon-neutral event in a way that also improves our environment and ecology.
  3. Promote our achievements in the media in order to set a precedence for future international events. ‘Set the bar’ and help by sharing our findings.

This weekend we made a great start with 2.

Carbon offsetting isn’t a silver bullet, and in many cases the best course of action is to reduce emissions however you can, but when you have a World Championships event in competitive sport avoiding travel isn’t feasible. So you need to workout the approach to offsetting that provides the broadest benefit, including ecological and social.

Working with the Transition and Greener Bude teams we decided that founding and planting a local community woodland to offset the carbon impact of the event (which is mostly air flight, and some road transport which is unavoidable with Surf Kayaks in this remote corner of the UK) would be the best approach. Working with Bude Friends of the Earth we have identified a location to create a community woodland near Bude, which will be a growing and sustainable legacy. A resource that will grow over time, be sensitive to our local ecology and accessible to the community. We hope that this project will set an example for future international surf events.

Bude Friends of the Earth clearing the site for planting.

So, this weekend we joined the volunteers at Friends of the Earth to begin clearing the site in preparation for this project. The plan is to begin with planting the initial windbreak species this autumn in order to provide shelter for the first woodland species such as oak as part of the 2021 World Championship event. We are incredibly grateful to the support from the local environmental groups, in particular Friends of the Earth, and to the incredibly generous landowner of the site. We also look forward to partnering with an environmental sponsor with the vision to help us make this dream a reality.

Willow surveys our hard work

More news to come soon……….

Así que decidimos que el Campeonato Mundial de Surf Kayaking 2021 sería diferente y nuestro objetivo sería reducir nuestro impacto ambiental a casi cero. De hecho, nuestro objetivo es sentar un precedente para futuros eventos internacionales de surf y kayak y contribuir al legado ambiental de nuestra ciudad, Bude. Para lograr esto, nos hemos comprometido a lo siguiente;

A message of ‘Thanks’ and a quick update

Just a quick note from the organisers (Chris, Jack and Marc) to give you all an update on where we are with the World Surf Kayak Championships 2021 preparation.

First – we would like to thank the Surf Kayak Community for all the messages of support following our decision to cancel the 2020 British Surf Kayak Championships & Home Internationals. We know it was as disappointing for you as it was us, and your backing has been very much appreciated!

So, a little on our progress.

Location

We have now confirmed that Black Rock will be the primary contest location, and have begun detailed planning with the site owners. We have space to create an athlete’s village and also observe social distancing rules in place at the time. The site has 2 main peaks – a left-hand reef break that holds really large swells and an A-Frame beach that has been super fun this year – which will allow us time to get through the contest during the best available conditions. Here is an earlier video of the site, and we will be trying to capture more footage to get you stoked as the autumn swells kick in over the next few months.

Dates

In accordance with WSKA recommendations, we have now decided that the contest window runs from September 24 to October 3. This provides us with the maximum window to host a full-sized contest in the very best conditions.

Transport

As we have decided upon a single primary site, we will not be providing transport for competitors. Given the remoteness of the beaches from Public Transport links, it is recommended that all teams and competitors have independent transport methods i.e. private vehicles to get to the site. This is in line with previous worlds, and being in rural areas is one of the blessings (and curses) of our sport.

A chance to surf at contest site before the Worlds

Hoping that the global pandemic will have eased and that life is a little more normal, the Shoreline Surf Spectacular Open Surf Kayak contest is provisionally scheduled to take place on 24/25 April 2021. This is an open contest run over 2 days with all the usual divisions, and a super fun handicap contest designed to get newcomers into competition participating alongside world champions until the later rounds of the contest. It is a lot of fun, very competitive (often the best attended contest on the English circuit), and open to all. As soon as entry information goes up on Tournr, we will let you know and we will try to provide a sufficient window for those wishing to travel from overseas.

Other Stuff around the Competition

Sponsorship – we are working hard to secure some top tier sponsors in the sport of kayaking, outdoor adventure in general, and some cool local brands within Cornwall and Bude itself. As we finalize sponsorship agreements, we will let you all know.

Tournr – The Tournr development team have been working hard add some new features that the whole Surf Kayak community can benefit from, and we hope to bring you news on that in the very near future.

Environment – We have established a site local to Bude for a community woodland which will enable us to fully offset the environmental costs of the event (including all competitors’ international travel emissions). We plan to maximise the impact of this initiative via media in order to set the bar for other kayak and surf-related international events, and also to provide an ongoing legacy for the local community in Bude.

Jim Winter

Many of you will know that England Surf Kayak team lost one of our family this year. Jim was a regular on the British contest circuit and also attended the World Championships in Portrush where many of you will have met him. Jim was a quiet, kind and principled man and we will all miss him very much.  Our thoughts go to his wife, Mel and his family. He was a friend to many of us and a great loss to the sport.

We hope to keep the updates coming more regularly as we approach a year to the date of the World Championships. If you’d like to be kept up-to-date then please subscribe to our Website and follow us on Facebook.

Good waves and stay happy,

Jack Barker,

Chris Skardon,

Marc Woolward

Managing our environmental impact – plastic pollution

As surfers we have a special connection to the ocean environment. As travelling surfers we are all conscious of our impact on our our ocean playground, which is also one of the most important habitats on our fragile planet.

One of our goals for the 2021 world championships of surfkayaking is to reduce our environmental impact – the cost to the planet of our travel and of our time spent riding waves in our beautiful town. Over the coming months we will be discussing some of these efforts with you.

One of the greatest challenges to our oceans comes from plastic pollution, the buildup of plastic debris which can remain in the environment for hundreds or thousands of years and poison wildlife. Everyone has witnessed the heartbreaking images of dead whales and seabirds with stacks of undigested plastic in their stomachs. We are determined to ensure our contest does not increase the pressure of plastic pollution on our ocean environment.

Fortunately, Bude is the home of Refill Project.

Refill Project ensures that clean, fresh Cornish Drinking water is always available for free from water fountains and cafes / bars around Bude. Each of our contest locations has a free refill site for you to bring your reusable cup to keep hydrated throughout the event. No additional cost, and no additional unnecessary pollution in the ocean!

In addition to free drinking water at each potential contest location you will find Refill locations all around the town.

and at every cafe and restaurant, whether or not you are eating there.

So, don’t forget to bring your reusable cup!!!!!!

A look at the Contest Locations (Part One) – Black Rock

The 2021 World Surfkayak Championships in Bude are being organized so that they can be held at various locations within a few miles of the Town Center. This will allow us to choose the optimum location for conditions day-by-day in order to make the very best of the contest window. Over the next few months, we will take a look at those waves in order to give you a better idea of what lies in store beginning with Black Rock this month.

Black Rock Beach is named after the large rock in the center of the reef at the south end of Widemouth Bay, and has been the home to one of the UK’s largest surfkayak contests over the past 2 decades – the Shoreline Surf classic which is consistently the best attended event in the English season. Black Rock is a reef break outside of the rock itself, mostly a super high performance left-hander across the reef into the channel with a more risky right-hander behind the rock and into the cliffs at Wanson. The reef works at medium to high tide (it becomes pretty shallow at mid tide which makes it hollow and sometimes sketchy) and pushes back to a nice sandbar at low. To the north of the Black Rock area is an A-frame beachbreak which will provide a second contest area, and in between there is mostly a nice channel to separate contest zones and provide a safe paddle out on bigger days. Black Rock can hold really large swells, and we’ve held contests there in double-overhead+ conditions.

In the autumn, when we see medium sized long-period swells accompanied with high pressure systems stuck over the UK, we often expect Black Rock to light up for days on end. Last weekend we saw a very similar weather pattern, and here’s a quick video I shot from the judging area after I’d just enjoyed an hour of perfection. The sets were coming in double this size but I was out of time having greedily taken as many waves as I could! On the left of the Video, you can see the reef (probably our A Site), in the center is the channel, and to the right the A-Frame beachbreak (B Site).

Hopefully this will start to get you all stoked!!!!!!
