Hello!

Charlotte here, and welcome to another ‘Introducing…’ post. Today we’re introducing you to Alan Holloway. Alan is a long term Kayaker, who enjoys a wide range of kayaking, I first met him during a Canoe Polo match with the Bude Canoe Club. In the middle of a game he paddled up to me and said:

“Hey, I don’t know how you’ve done it, but I think you’re sat backwards in that”

He was of course right and I like to think we’ve been friends since 🙂 Most recently he’s taken on the mantel of being the Captain of the Bude Canoe Club Canoe Polo team, as well as being a top-end Pastry Chef.

I had a chat with Alan a little while ago, we talked about a lot of things and I hope this will let you know a bit more about another member of the committee and about what we’re doing to get the Worlds on track…

What’s your role in the competition?

I’m the Hospitality Director – basically, people who come into contact with any event or moment organised by us (that isn’t the competition) will have been organised by me (with a lot of help of course!!)

Why did you decide to do this?

It’s the excitement of it being in Bude, somewhere I’ve grown up and lived near for a large part of my life. Not only that, but knowing the rest of the team on the committee and the fact that it is hosted by the [Bude] Canoe Club just made it an ideal situation.

What do you hope the competition can achieve?

Lots of things! I’d love to see an increase in Surf Kayking, get more exposure of Bude to the world. Introduce the club to potential new members, and really try to use the inspiration to encourage Juniors into the sport.

What do you see as the challenges for the role?

COVID is probably the biggest problem, mainly the uncertainty it brings. We’re extremely lucky to have a great business community in and around Bude, but with closures, difficult trading circumstances and the potential of things like lockdowns it’s very hard to get things confirmed. One of the main things I’m worried about is fraying relationships with businesses when there are so many unknowables. I’m trying my hardest to be concrete about things (dates etc) but when things can change in the space of a few hours, it’s horrible, and I don’t want to have to cancel or delay with businesses who might be relying on us in some way.

When did you start Surf Kayaking? Being Involved?

I first started in school, and wanted to go surfing, so I got a second hand Waveski (Raider) and played in the surf for a while. Eventually, I joined the Bude Canoe Club, and I was taken to my first Surf competition by Andy Hambley at Sandymouth, where I was given the use of a Jester IC (long) boat. Dead last 🙂

Favorite Surf Spot?

I don’t surf that much at the moment, but there is nothing like Summerleaze (Bude) on a High tide, when it’s 1-2 foot and the waves are just right!

What’s the peak of your life/sport?

I have been fortunate enough to be involved in Canoe Polo for a number of years, and over these last couple of years – I have been the captain of the Bude Canoe Club Canoe Polo Team, where we got through to the Semi Finals in the Cardiff University Canoe Polo Tournament.

The unavoidable question: How has 2020 been?!

On the positive side, I’ve been able to stay at work in a job I love, and being furloughed for some of the time has given me more time to focus on this competition, which has been really useful. Obviously a highly-contagious virus has reduced the times the [Canoe] Club meets, and that’s one of the worst things, as we’ve done no Polo this year, and it looks like that way for this season as well.

Presentando … Alan Holloway

¡Hola!

Aquí Charlotte, y bienvenido a otra publicación “Presentando …”. Hoy le presentamos a Alan Holloway. Alan es un kayakista desde hace mucho tiempo, que disfruta de una amplia gama de kayak, lo conocí durante un partido de Canoe Polo con el Bude Canoe Club. En medio de un juego, se me acercó remando y me dijo:

“Oye, no sé cómo lo has hecho, pero creo que estás sentado al revés en eso”

Por supuesto, tenía razón y me gusta pensar que hemos sido amigos desde 🙂 Más recientemente, ha asumido la responsabilidad de ser el capitán del equipo de polo de canoa del Bude Canoe Club, además de ser un chef pastelero de primer nivel.

Hablé con Alan hace un rato, hablamos de muchas cosas y espero que esto les permita saber un poco más sobre otro miembro del comité y sobre lo que estamos haciendo para encaminar al Mundial …

¿Cuál es tu papel en la competición?

Soy el Director de Hospitalidad – básicamente, las personas que entran en contacto con cualquier evento o momento organizado por nosotros (que no sea la competencia) habrán sido organizados por mí (¡¡con mucha ayuda por supuesto !!)

¿Por qué decidiste hacer esto?

Es la emoción de estar en Bude, un lugar donde crecí y viví cerca durante gran parte de mi vida. No solo eso, sino que conocer al resto del equipo en el comité y el hecho de que está alojado en el [Bude] Canoe Club lo convirtió en una situación ideal.

¿Qué espera que logre la competencia?

¡Muchas cosas! Me encantaría ver un aumento en el Surf Kayking, obtener una mayor exposición de Bude al mundo. Presente el club a nuevos miembros potenciales y trate de usar la inspiración para animar a los jóvenes a participar en el deporte.

¿Cuáles cree que son los desafíos para el puesto?

El COVID es probablemente el mayor problema, principalmente la incertidumbre que trae. Somos extremadamente afortunados de tener una gran comunidad empresarial en Bude y sus alrededores, pero con cierres, circunstancias comerciales difíciles y el potencial de cosas como cierres, es muy difícil confirmar las cosas. Una de las principales cosas que me preocupan es el deterioro de las relaciones con las empresas cuando hay tantas cosas incognoscibles. Estoy haciendo todo lo posible para ser concreto sobre las cosas (fechas, etc.), pero cuando las cosas pueden cambiar en el espacio de unas pocas horas, es horrible y no quiero tener que cancelar o retrasarme con empresas que podrían estar confiando en nosotros de alguna manera.

¿Cuándo empezaste con el kayak de surf? ¿Estar involucrado?

Empecé en la escuela y quería hacer surf, así que compré un Waveski (Raider) de segunda mano y jugué en el surf durante un tiempo. Finalmente, me uní al Bude Canoe Club, y Andy Hambley me llevó a mi primera competencia de surf en Sandymouth, donde me dieron el uso de un bote Jester IC (largo). Murió último 🙂

¿Lugar de surf favorito?

No surfeo mucho en este momento, pero no hay nada como Summerleaze (Bude) en marea alta, cuando mide 1-2 pies y las olas son perfectas.

¿Cuál es la cima de tu vida / deporte?

He tenido la suerte de estar involucrado en Canoe Polo durante varios años, y durante estos últimos años, he sido el capitán del Bude Canoe Club Canoe Polo Team, donde llegamos a las semifinales en Cardiff. Torneo Universitario de Polo en Canoa.

La pregunta ineludible: ¡¿Cómo ha sido 2020 ?!

En el lado positivo, he podido permanecer en el trabajo en un trabajo que amo, y estar en licencia por un tiempo me ha dado más tiempo para concentrarme en esta competencia, lo cual ha sido realmente útil. Obviamente, un virus altamente contagioso ha reducido los tiempos de reunión del Club [Canoa], y esa es una de las peores cosas, ya que no hemos hecho Polo este año, y parece que lo es para esta temporada también.
